The History Of A Floris Icon - No. 89

October 26, 2015

No. 89 has been an icon among the Floris collection for over 60 years. First crafted in 1951, No. 89 takes its name from the number of our flagship shop on Jermyn Street.

Fleming also mentions some of his favourite Floris fragrances and grooming products including Limes Bath Essence in the novels ‘Moonraker’, ‘Diamonds are Forever’ and ‘Dr. No’.

Interesting Fact: Did you know that Ian Fleming bough a flat on Ebury Street in Belgravia (down the road from our Ebury Street Boutique) where "Moonraker" villain Sir Hugo Drax would also live?  In the book, Bond chases Drax down Ebury Street all the way onto the A20 to Dover.

No. 89 is a classic and timeless scent among the Floris collection, conjuring fresh citrus top notes of bergamot and orange and imbued with herbaceous tones of lavender. The masculine floral heart is warmed with a touch of spicy nutmeg and underscored by a dominant woody accord of sandalwood, cedarwood and vetiver, No. 89 is a fragrance for the quintessentially English gentleman.

Floris No. 89 Gentleman Fragrance

No. 89 Eau de Toilette is available in 100ml and 50ml bottles. The Gentleman Floris grooming collection is also fragranced with No. 89.

Just around the corner from Floris Jermyn Street is Dukes Hotel in St. James, London. Dukes Bar is a small enclave within the hotel and the world famous cocktail bar is said to have inspired Ian Fleming for James Bond's signature martini, being the bar where he wrote many of his novels.

With Fleming also being a devoted customer at Floris and the iconic No. 89 fragrance, we decided to embark on an exciting collaboration with Dukes to create the exclusive martini Fleming 89. Expertly crafted by Head Barman at Dukes, Alessandro Palazzi, Fleming 89 celebrates the link between Ian Fleming and the gentry locations of Floris and Dukes in which Fleming enjoyed spending much of his time.

Alessandro Palazzi was very much inspired by the ingredients written in the original 1951 formula book for the No. 89 fragrance and after much experimentation, arrived at a final combination of vodka infused with tonka beans, chocolate bitters, specially made English amber vermouth, Stolichnaya ELIT vodka and rose liquer.

The flavour of the martini is sophisticated and smooth and complementary to the aroma of the quintessentially English gentleman’s fragrance No. 89.

The Fleming 89 is available exclusively at Duke’s Bar. For more information please visit www.dukeshotel.com
