The Art and Rituals of Shaving

June 4, 2014

It may take time to achieve the ultimate clean-shaven look but at Floris we believe it should be a pleasure rather than a chore.

The art of shaving involves using the best grooming products along with a superior shaving brush and time-honoured rituals. Follow these steps and tips to achieve a smooth, close and satisfying shave.

1. Before you begin, take a warm shower or splash the face with warm water to open the pores and soften the beard.

2. You’ll be far more inclined to linger over the grooming process if you have the right tools for the job. Try our beautifully crafted briarwood and gold plate shaving brush which is a joy to use. The fine tips of badger hair in the brush create a smooth creamy lather for a comfortable shave.

3. Dip your shaving brush in hot water, shake off excess and using Floris shaving soap or cream work up a lather over the areas of the face and neck to be shaved. The process of lathering with hot water will further soften the skin and lift and soften the beard prior to shaving.

4. Always shave in the direction of the beard, starting below the sideburns and working down each side of the face towards the chin, finishing at the neck. Let the razor glide over the skin, without applying too much pressure. For a closer shave, re-lather and shave across or against the beard making sure the blade is sharp so that it doesn't irritate the skin.

5. Finish by rinsing off with cold water to close the pores and apply aftershave or alcohol free aftershave balm. We recommend Floris No.89, a warming woody fragrance with a cool, floral citrus twist or Santal for something more sensual and spicy.

6. Make sure your brush is clean and ready for the next shave. Rinse the brush gently but thoroughly in clean water, flick off the excess water and place the brush in a stand with the hair pointing down so that the air can get to all the hairs and dry the brush naturally.
